Orlando Project

Orlando Project

Location: South Carthay, a historically designated neighborhood of Los Angeles offering 1930’s architecture built in the Spanish colonial revival style, with craftsmanship and decorative detailing consistent with art deco vocabulary.

Client: award winning sound engineer.  An introverted and innovative entepreneur wanted to live quietly in a home that displayed his coveted collections of art and vintage poetry in an elegant, tasteful way. To achieve this, Shapiro Joyal used the art deco motifs of the 1930’s architecture as her inspiration, allowing geometry and clean lines to serve as a backdrop for minimal yet soulful furniture. Masculine materials such as solid walnut, solid maple, charcoal wool felt and black ironwork create a strong contrast to the white walls and parchment window shades. Streamlined custom furniture is combined with Japanese antiques to lend nuance and richness to the art deco home, working in harmony with the geometric motifs of the architecture.
