Whitley Heights Project

Whitley Heights Project

Whitley Heights, a historically designated neighborhood in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, where early Hollywood movie stars lived and played. The neighborhood is coveted for its idyllic walking streets and European inspired details. Architecture is often in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, with decorative motifs borrowed from the glamorous age of art deco. White plaster houses highlighted with black iron work, repetitive arches, and red tile roofs are cut into the hillsides and sit cozily amongst lush gardens and palm trees.

Client: The client moved into Los Angeles from New York a few years before finding his dream home.  His passion for all things Los Angeles was strong, and his first move into a charming 1930’s apartment gave him a taste for the local furniture and collectables that the city offers. With a hope to settle permanently, he found an exquisite 100 year house perched above the hills of Whitley Heights, an area known for its walkable charm and legendary movie star residents.

Client directive: wants a warm but masculine home. Craftsmanship and quality is priority. Artistry and creativity are equally important.  Let the historic motifs of the neighborhood guide decisions, anchoring old and new in a fresh and exciting way.  Create a space that greets people warmly and beautifully. Furniture should be provocative and comfortable; pieces should tell a story.  Design spaces that are innovative and functional. Employ materials that encourage engagement and lounging.

Anchor materials chosen: solid wood:  American and Claro walnut, white oak, concrete, Spanish tiles, earthy ceramics, waxed ironwork, wool felt, saddle leather. All come together to create an unmistakable richness and longevity.
