Early days
Early days: deciding on a collection
Since childhood I had been painting, a hobby my mother involved me in from a young age. I adopted my grandmothers love of the process, but we differed in our use of materials. She focused on oils, but I became infatuated with watercolor. My fascination with wood was added to the story, and I began to create collections of screens handpainted on wood panels. Originally, it seemed the studio would serve as a space to showcase these pieces, but it quickly became apparent that furniture was going to be the main focus. Browsing my sketchbooks, I decided on a few key pieces to build, and I opened the studio with 9:
October sofa
October chair
Totem bookcase
TT bench
April low console
April coffee table
Stringer coffee table
KC dining table
Lucke side chair
Beds and upholstered pieces eventually followed, though the use of solid wood and minimal profiles became a signature look for the company. These 9 pieces allowed for modification, and opened an opportunity for endless collaboration with other architects and designers. It didn’t take long to realize I had found my niche.
