October sofa

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley suburb of Los Angeles in an Edward H. Fickett designed home (more on that later) which was filled with antiques, oddities and furniture of the moment. Scandinavian designs were very popular during this time. This was the late 1960’s, and trending pieces were pared down and designed without additional flourish or details. Our family spent many afternoons on a sofa made of solid maple…the wood was cut butcher block style and finished with a clear lacquer. It was low and comfortable, and the large, loose, down filled cushions juxtaposed the angularity of the frame.  That sofa seemed to fit wherever it was placed.  Years later when I moved into my own apartment in West Hollywood, I took it with me. As I began my studies in design, I became aware of how well appointed it was, and it became the initial inspiration for my own October couch. Forever a proponent of timeless furniture, the sofa followed me into many a home throughout the years, and it remains in our family today, currently living in a mid century home by the beach.
